It’s no secret: I love to eat. I love to try different foods. There isn’t much that I do not eat. I am so thankful that I am not a picky eater. I cook a lot. However, I am always on the lookout for new restaurants to check out. At my regular hangouts, I can say I have tried most of the food on their menu. That said, once I’ve found something I really love, chances are I’ll order it every time.
One of my favourite Saturday treats is a Roti. A wrapped curry goat or chicken roti to be exact.
What is Roti?
Roti is a traditional, round, flatbread that hails from the Indian subcontinent. It is a popular food in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Myanmar, and Pakistan. It is also popular in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Guyana. Originally from India, Roti has been imported to places as far flung as Mauritius and Trinidad and Tobago.
The roti dough is made from whole wheat flour and is traditionally used to scoop up curries and sabzis. Some people still eat it that way. However when I get a one it is usually filled with curry goat, stewed potatoes, and various kinds of lentils. It resembles a burrito but is more flavourful in my opinion. Thow is some homemade Caribbean hot pepper sauce and it’s a match made in heaven. Some places smear mashed sweet potatoes onto the bread before adding the meat stew. That gives it an extra layer out flavour as the sweetness compliments the fierceness of the peppersauce perfectly.
Friends who I have introduced to it are usually shocked at how large and heavy it is. I always joke that it weighs 5lbs. I’ll have to weigh it next time I get one.
